The Caribbean island of Dominica suffered major destruction from Tropical Storm Erika which hit on the night of Aug. 26, 2015.

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. Aug. 31, 2015: With some 20 declared dead in the Commonwealth of Dominica and as the island grapples with major infrastructure damage, several organizations in New York City yesterday stepped up to stage a relief effort for the people on the island of less than 73,000.

The Consul General of Dominica, Mrs. Barbara Dailey along with the Ambassador Vince Henderson, the Consul General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Selmon Walters, the Consul General of St. Lucia, Julian DuBois and Ambassador Derick James of Grenada along with SVG Relief Inc., COSAGO and The Dominica Emerald Organization of New Jersey on Sunday afternoon August 30th hosted a relief effort at 671 Prospect Place in Brooklyn, NY.

Household items such as canned goods, cleaning supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, detergent, disinfectants, school supplies and medical supplies such as disposable gloves, adult diapers, sponges; sheets (double and Queen); towels were being collected.
Please come out and support the people of our sister island.

The effort comes as the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, has expressed his deep concern over the loss of life and damage to infrastructure and property in Dominica following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika last Wednesday night.

Even as the full scope of the devastation wrought was being assessed on the ground, the Secretary General transmitted to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit his personal sadness over the tragic effects of the disaster and his concern for the people of Dominica, and pledged the assistance, solidarity and support of the OAS.

St. Lucia is already pitching in to help. Among its first steps, the Government of Saint Lucia, through the National Emergency Management Organization, has donated sixty (60) boxes of supplies, including forty (40) boxes of hygiene kits, to the Office of Disaster Management (ODM) in Dominica. The Ministry of Health has also provided twenty (20) boxes of medical supplies.

The donation drive is being coordinated by the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO). Post Offices around the island have been designated as the drop off points for supplies. Items needed include clothing, water, dried and canned foods, and other general household supplies.
