PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten – In true community spirit, the owners of the private sector company GEMINI CONTRACTORS, Rudy Nijbroek and Mariska De Jong, made a very significant donation to the SIMARC Foundation (Sint Maarten Archaeological Center).
They sponsored an office-container for SIMARC to be able to conduct an emergency rescue of the island’s archaeological artifact collections, which are a vital part of St. Maarten’s heritage. The SIMARC center was destroyed in Hurricane Irma, and rescuing these national patrimony artifacts is the highest priority of SIMARC at this time.
Now that the container is ready, the transfer of the artifacts from the destroyed facility is possible, with the eventual placement of the container to be determined later, and a new SIMARC facility is being sought.
This donation is also complimented by significant financial and logistical contributions from primarily the Prince Bernhard Culture Funds (Caribbean Region), and also the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, and Ministry VROMI.
