California wildfires: Malibu homes burn as death toll climbs to nine

The blaze started on Thursday near Thousand Oaks, about 40 miles (64km) north-west of central Los Angeles, prompting the evacuation of 75,000 homes. Another blaze, the Hill Fire, started at about the same time, also near Thousand Oaks. Thousands more residents have since been ordered to evacuate towns to the west, including Calabasas, the south of Highway 101, and Malibu on the coast, as well as from the western edge of Los Angeles. On Friday, the flames jumped the highway and headed into coastal areas.
